Subkirke is the name we have given our church as we use it for a venue to host (mostly) Indie Rock concerts. Why do we host concerts? A few years ago, our church created a document that outlined our vision. That document is called The Weather Report. The Weather Report discusses the need to prioritize evangelism. While not limiting our efforts to them, it stresses the potential of our congregation to reach out to undergraduates and graduate students-- henceforth referred collectively as under/grads. The best way to reach under/grads (or anyone for that matter) is not a program. Itʼs you. The most effective outreach is a meaningful relationship. That doesnʼt make programs worthless. Programs can create contexts which are conducive to forming the kinds of relationships that are meaningful. This is the thinking behind Subkirke. Our primary goal is to create an environment that communicates to nonChristians (whether or not theyʼre students) that they are welcome here. Whether theyʼre performing on stage or sitting in the audience, we want them to enjoy themselves. People should not feel like a target or a project, they should simply feel cared for. We want them to experience the gospel-- even if it goes unarticulated. It is our assumption that such experiences foster relationships which create openness to hearing the gospel as well. But Subkirke events will never force the issue. That said, we had hoped that, as a result of the concerts, weʼd be able to attract under/grads to an alternative worship service during the week.
