Small Groups at SBCRCWhat is a Small Group? A Small Group is a small fellowship made up of about 10-16 people who meet weekly to share, study and support one another. A leader and host lead each group. An average meeting lasts for an hour and a half to two hours, depending on whether there are light refreshments or a full meal on the agenda. Our goal for each year is to have at least 80% of our adults involved on a weekly basis. How Important Are Small Groups? At South Bend CRC, Small Groups provide a vital context for our spiritual formation. In Small Groups we minister to one another as we study God's Word and support and share our lives with one another. Small Groups foster a church culture of vulnerability as grace and trust grow between participants. Meeting together on a regular basis is vital for safe relationships to form. When and Where Do They Meet? Small Groups meet on various nights of the week in homes throughout Michiana. Most evening groups meet 7-9 pm. The daytime group meeting times vary. Most groups meet in homes, but some meet at the church to take advantage of childcare. How Long Do They Continue? The Small Groups meet in 9 to 11 week blocks scheduled during the Fall, Winter & Spring. At the end of each 9 to 11 week block, participants have the choice of staying in the same group, trying a new group or even taking a break from Small Groups altogether. Most groups will stay together all three sessions, and that is the goal. However, since commitment is the key to a strong Small Group, during the first three weeks participants new to a group can decide if it's a good fit, and if not they can elect to “bow out.” Small Groups do not ordinarily meet mid-June through August, though they are free to continue meeting if they wish. How Do I Sign Up For A Small Group? We offer sign-ups for Small Groups each Fall and people available at a sign-up table to help you choose a group and answer questions. Sometimes a new group forms in January, but often groups are seeking members. Please contact Paula Triezenberg who will find a group for you to try. What Will We Study? Some groups will reflect and discuss the Sunday morning sermon. Each week there will be Bible passages and questions prepared for study on the sermon. You might think of the Small Group as a place where you get to roll up your sleeves and discuss how Sunday’s message can be worked out in your life. Other groups choose to use other study materials. What Does It Cost? Few things in life are free and Small Groups are no exception! The cost of Small Groups is the cost of commitment. During the first meeting, each group will discuss their priorities and commitment. Part of that commitment is the promise to make every effort to attend each week and participate in one Small Group service project during the quarter. If a group purchases study materials they pay for them. What About Childcare? We leave it up to each group to work out their own childcare arrangements. Some groups may opt to meet at church on Sunday nights to take advantage of Boys’ and Girls’ Club meetings. Sometimes it works best for families to share a sitter or to swap childcare with another family whose group meets on a different evening. Some groups host childcare where the group meets and share costs. However it is done, the group is best served if parents can stay and attend the discussion throughout the whole meeting. How Can I get More Information? If you have questions, especially if you are new to SBCRC, please don't hesitate to call the church, and we will gladly assist you. Also, you can call the church office at any time to speak to Paula Triezenberg our Pastor of Christian Formation who can assist you in finding and signing up for a group, or answer any questions. 574.272.8424
