The Christian Reformed Church (CRC) is a denomination in the Reformed or Calvinist tradition that has some 290,000 members in over 800 congregations all across the U.S. and Canada. Click the denominational link to see more about the history of our church. Our local congregation is made up of approximately 40% of people from a CRC background and 60% from almost every imaginable church background or none at all. The CRC consciously relates itself to the worldwide body of Christ, recognizing "one Lord, one faith, one baptism" (Eph. 4:3). Our particular doctrinal outlook is Calvinist, one of the three main branches of Protestantism stemming from the Reformation, the others being Baptist (or Anabaptist) and Lutheran. The Presbyterian churches, and our closest cousins, the Reformed Church in America, are examples of Reformed or Calvinist churches in America today. Calvinism shares many teachings with the rest of the Christian church, and we recognize that each denomination and tradition has something to offer the whole church. Calvinism also offers some unique doctrinal emphases. Three emphases you may notice are: 1. The sovereignty of God in grace and salvation. 2. The unity and importance of both the Old and New Testaments (or covenants). 3. A holistic vision of faith which leaves no area of life untouched by the claims of Christ and his Kingdom. The CRC is a confessional church, meaning that our doctrinal basis is formed by three confessional documents from the 16th and 17th centuries: the Belgic Confession, the Canons of Dort and, most importantly, the Heidelberg Catechism, which is still regularly used in teaching young people and the congregation. You can find these confessions in the back of the Psalter Hymnal in the pews. While we do not hold to the exact wording in every instance since these documents come to us from the 16th and 17th centuries, we do hold to the main principles outlined there, and ordained office bearers (ministers, elders and deacons) subscribe to them.
