Elements of our worship service
Listening to God's Word
One of the most important acts of worship is listening to God’s Word. You will notice that our services always include several readings from the Bible. At the center of our services is an extended reflection on the reading of God’s Word called the sermon. The Scripture passages for the day provide themes on which the whole service is planned. The songs, prayers and acts of worship chosen are based on these weekly themes.
Celebrating the Sacraments
A second important act of worship is participation in the sacraments of baptism and the Lord’s Supper. These acts involve very physical elements—water, bread and cup—that powerfully remind us of God’s grace and ongoing activity in our world. The sacrament of Holy Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday morning of each month. The sacrament of Holy Baptism is celebrated as needed on the last Sunday of each month.
Responding in Praise and Prayer
In addition to the central acts of listening to God’s Word and participation in the sacraments, we also include expressions of praise and prayer in our worship services. These are offered as a response to God’s Word. They are communal expressions of prayers we offer as individuals and households throughout the week. Sometimes these praises and prayers are sung and spoken by the whole congregation; at other times, they are sung by a soloist or choir or spoken by a member of the congregation.
